Do THC Vapes Expire? Understanding Shelf Life and Storage

Finding an old vape cartridge at the back of a drawer leads to many questions, one of which is: Do THC Vapes Expire?? Of course they do, but why? Cannabis oil, like any product that contains THC, has a limited shelf life just like any organic product, but instead of spoiling like a carton of milk, the oil just loses potency over time, as well as flavor, and therefore its effectiveness.

What is the Shelf Life of THC Cartridges?

Typically, THC cartridges are good for at least one, and up to two years. That is of course assuming that the cartridge is stored properly. Even after a year or two, that oil doesn’t become toxic like food does, but it will have lost in quality. THC is the chemical that’s main focus. Even when not exposed to heat or oxygen, over time it will gradually break down to CBN, which is Cannabinoid. Unlike THC, CBN is not really psychoactive, and is more known for just making people sleepy rather than high. The good news is CBN is not harmful.

Do THC Vapes Expire? Signs Your THC Vape Has Expired

Most cartridges have a shelf life and can expire. You can detect some of their expiration indicators for THC vapes.
Color Change – High quality THC oil is usually a golden or light amber hue. With age and degradation, it darkens to a deep brown or sludge-like color.
Change in Consistency – If you notice any of the oil crystallizing, or the oil thickens to a sludgy texture, it has degraded in quality and consistency.

Taste and Smell – Some of the stronger indicators of THC oil expiration are its smell and taste. If the once flavorful pulls you would take from a cartridge become replaced by harsh, metallic, or bitter flavors, the cartridge has expired.
Reduced Potency – When the oil is vaped, and you feel little to nothing different in your body, that is a sign that the cannabinoids have expired and broken down.

Factors Affecting Longevity

The following acceleration of expiration degradation can occur from the following.
Light – UV Lighting destroys cannabinoids and if a cartridge is covered in sunlight, it is one of the quickest ways to ruin a THC oil pen
Heat – High temperatures can dry out and evaporate the needed terpenes.
Oxygen – When unsealed, cartridges degrade more quickly due to the oxidation that occurs.

Tips for Storing THC Vapes

To keep your THC vapes in good shape, store them the right way. Keep your cartridges in a cool, dark, and dry spot, like a drawer or lockbox out of the sun. Store them standing up. This will help prevent the oil from leaking on the mouthpiece as well as saturate the wick, making it ready to go on the next consumption. Following these simple rules of storing THC vapes will guarantee that it stays fresh and flavorful for as long as possible.
